The intense passion for solving the case is observed in every part written by Michael Connelly. For this 22nd part of the series, the author had something special in it because he wanted to add a few more people to the fan list. Harry Bosch has been the kind of character who is liked by everyone and people like his love for his job. He has a habit of solving cases that appear to be tough for the police because Harry likes a tough job in his hands all the time.
Harry’s mentor John Jack Thompson dies in this episode and Harry is called to the funeral by John’s wife. It was a highly sentimental thing for the man because he learned everything from John and if John had not been there for him then Harry might not be able to make it this far. After the funeral, John’s wife gives Harry a murder book that John brought home after his retirement. John never told anyone about the book in which the details of the murder were written.
The murder took place in the alley which used to be notorious for drug deals. Harry takes the help of Renee Ballard who happens to be an expert in the field as well. The two starts going after the leads and one thing which terrifies them is the reason behind the hiding of the book.
Perhaps John never wanted the case to be solved or there could be a chance that he was trying to solve the case on his own. Memories of The Black Ice: Harry Bosch Series, Book 2, and Desert Star would be revived for sure by the narration of Titus Welliver and Christine Lakin. This mission also has a love story attached to it so Harry and Ballard are with some distractions of their own to deal with.
