One elf stands in the way of evil and so far he has proved that he is fully capable of defending his domain. The dark elf has always fought for a cause and has never backed down no matter how hard the task is for him. R.A. Salvatore has created many complex characters in his career and till present, the character of the dark elf is at the top of the rest. Drizzt follows a proper code in life and has never hurt the innocent ever. Orcs invade the territory this time and it is not known that from where the enemy is coming.
The invaders show no mercy towards the innocent and are bound to take as many lives as possible. Of course, Drizzt cannot stand all of this so he decides to take out his sword so that justice can be served. Along with his friends, the dark elf goes on another mission in which the enemies are unknown. For most of the novel, the target is not clear for Drizzt and he wanders after strange enemies.
The Crystal Shard and The Ghost King were not like that at all because in those novels there was one prime target for the heroes. When Drizzt finds the one behind everything then he gets surprised for a while and it seems that he was not mentally prepared for all of that but this type of sensation is short-lived in the story.
Orcs damage the land and life of the people to a large extent, at the end the listener can guess that it will take years for Drizzt and his friends to rebuild the place. Victor Bevine’s narration has served the purpose very well like always in the narration of this novel.
