Terry Goodkind always cuts his long series in sections to keep the interest alive and make it easy to understand for the fans. One can start from any of these sections and can become a part of this series. Richard and Kahlan have been part of many trilogies before this and are the favorite creations of Goodkind. Both of these characters have been found working together in every part before this. Here they were also taking part in a war during which Richard got injured heavily and lost his senses.
After a long treatment, Richard came to his senses and the first thing he was worried about was the safety of Kahlan. Kahlan was not present near him and apparently, Richard was left with no clue about her. All the people surrounding Richard had no idea what becomes of the woman that he is looking for. More tension hits Richard when the people don’t even remember Kahlan’s name.
The people pretend as if the woman never existed in front of them. As Richard talks about his marriage the people say that he was not married at all but he remembers the presence of that beautiful woman in his life and he is not ready to give up on her so quickly.
As time passes more doubts hit Richard’s mind because he starts to think that perhaps Kahlan existed in his mind only. This is the first part of the series and already it was a step ahead of Wizard’s First Rule and Stone of Tears. True love and the need for a loved one in life are best explained in the story. Jim Bond has used a sentimental voice during narration when Richard finally starts looking for the love of his life.
