The third book in the series will never force anyone to back to the first two because the story is moving forward with complete details of the past all the time. There is ample information for everyone linked to every character. Actually, Mercy and her team remain the same and they face a different villain all the time. Mercy Thompson happens to be a shape-shifter but this happens to be a secret that only a few people know and for the rest of the world she is a car mechanic.
She has been working for her boss for a long time and she knows one thing i.e she has saved the human world on a number of occasions under the supervision of her boss. This time the same man is in trouble because he has been arrested and his own men have put him behind bars for the rest of his life.
The people around him think that he has committed certain hideous crimes but Mercy does not believe in such lies. She wants to save her boss and she has to convince him first in order to cooperate because he has decided to go down without a fight. There are two werewolves who are ready to help Mercy and she has to choose one of them.
Patricia Briggs has turned on the fight to a bigger level in the novel and it is surely bigger than Hunting Ground and Night Broken. Lorelei King has remained unchanged in the series and it is nice to listen to a familiar voice all the time. Mercy gives her hundred percent because she does not want to lose the one who has done so much for her in life.
