Greek mythology is full of strong female characters on most occasions but the role of female characters cannot be left untouched. There have been strong female characters in myths and the author Natalie Haynes has described all of them in detail. The author has used the word Pandora for the book because in the past women were known because of their evil and sinful nature.
The female characters in most of the mythologies are treated as evil doers who mislead men to commit acts that they hate later on. It was a woman who opened Pandora box in the first place and because of her curiosity, evil was unleashed in the world. Natalie also narrates characters like that of Jocasta who was Oedipus’ mother in reality but she became his lover and married him as well.
It was that sinful act of hers that brought destruction upon her kingdom and her son as well. Then there is the legendary Helen of Troy who was known for her beauty all over the world. It was her marriage that started the Trojan wars and ended in sheer bloodshed. Medusa is supposed to be the biggest evil of all who had snakes instead of hair and her glance could transform men into stone.
The same kind of material can be heard in A Thousand Ships and Stone Blind so we can listen to any one of these books in order to get the same kind of sensation. This book in comparison to the other two books is more complete. It has more characters in it and all of them are given equal status during the discussion.
