James S. A. Corey depicts the situation in which the people of the earth are trying to find other new worlds for themselves. Several discoveries were made in the past but nothing was worthwhile. Now finally the scientists from the human world have reached something miraculous. They have found a new alien world that never appeared on their radars before. Everyone first got stunned and then the curiosity aroused to explore this new world which is just like the earth in appearance.
There were signs of life on the planet but when the human scientists and explorers landed on it all they saw was barren land. Still, everyone was very excited because they finally had a place where they can establish a human community. Cara and her family were among the researchers. At first, Cara was also hopeful about everything, and then she found something which has remained hidden from the humans.
The planet was empty from the outside but there was something that was lying under its surface and it didn’t appear to be friendly. The hidden enemy is more suspicious than in Babylon’s Ashes and Nemesis Games. When the species under the surface of the planet reveals itself then there is no escape for anyone.
Fighting would have been an option if they had come prepared now they can only run and hope that they survive the wrath. Narration by Jefferson Mays makes the story look wild and it is a very big contribution by the narrator to this story. Strange happenings and spooky landscapes can make a permanent place in the mind of the fans.
