Narrator William DeMeritt is one of those rare ones who never makes a mistake in the narration of the story. The narrator has never allowed any kind of pause to enter his domain so the narration is always a smooth flow like the one, all of us observed in The Other Mother and Masters of Scale. This is the story of the Civil War that Nathan Harris has knitted in this book. Prentiss and Landry are the two brothers who have been freed because of the emancipation proclamation at the beginning of the tale.
After getting their freedom, the first thing they think about is their mother. Their mother was sold in the days of slavery and now they want to reach her. They know that they would be able to start their life once again after finding their mother.
During their journey, they meet George Walker who provides them with a place to live for the time being. George lost his only son during the war so he wants the two boys to stay with him so that he can get some sort of help from them with the daily chores. The boys decide to stay for a while so that they can earn some money which will help them in their traveling.
Another story goes side by side with this one in which two Confederate soldiers are caught by the locals because they were violating the law. In this part of the world, Isabelle emerges as a new leader for the people. All the people rally around her and a new campaign starts in a big way in the area.
